DESIGNED FOR LAWYERS BY A LAWYER

Mindfulness for Lawyers is not a generic mindfulness program retrofitted for lawyers. Our founder, Jon Krop, is a lawyer himself and designed our programs with lawyers in mind.

Every aspect of the program — from the techniques offered, to the teaching style, to the take-home materials — reflects an unwavering focus on lawyers as the audience.

NO CRYSTALS, NO CHANTING

Jon appreciates that lawyers are evidence-based thinkers. He is too, which is why there is nothing new-age or mystical about the Mindfulness for Lawyers program.

Although Jon has studied with traditional Buddhist teachers, he teaches in a secular style without esoteric overtones.  He leads workshops in a suit and tie, and he starts with a brief overview of the scientific research around mindfulness.

The programs are fun and often funny, but always professional.

+ Six-Part Series: Exploring Mindfulness & Well-Being

(Click link again to collapse this text.)

This series — our most comprehensive — offers a guided tour of the different domains of well-being and mindfulness. Over six 30-minute sessions, we explore simple, practical ways to manage stress and anxiety, boost focus and performance, cultivate resilience and positive emotions, manage conflict, and avoid digital overload.

The short session length and variety of topics are ideal for the practicalities of virtual learning. Each session stands alone, so participants can attend whichever ones they like.

"Jon's presentation style was a perfect fit for our population."

- Kimberly Haulk, Director of Employee Benefits, Littler, on the six-part series

+ Three Part Series: Beating Return-to-Work Anxiety

(Click link again to collapse this text.)

Returning to the office is a huge shift, after a hard year. This period of transition can be stressful and disorienting... but it doesn't have to be.

Over three 30-minute sessions, we'll explore simple, practical strategies for managing return-to-work anxiety in its different forms; drawing strength, rather than stress, from being around coworkers again; and building healthy routines to anchor us during times of outward change.

The program draws on mindfulness, social psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, and the psychology of habit formation.

As with our six-part series (see above), the short session length is well-suited for virtual learning, and each session stands alone, so participants can attend whichever ones they like.

+ Three-Part Series: Thriving in Changing Times

(Click link again to collapse this text.)

In this time of turmoil and transition, it’s natural to feel stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed. Over three 30-minute sessions, this program offers practical, evidence-supported methods for managing anxiety, boosting positive emotions, and cultivating calm and focus amid turbulent circumstances.

The program draws on mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, and positive psychology.

As with our six-part series (see above), the short session length is well-suited for virtual learning, and each session stands alone, so participants can attend whichever ones they like.

+ Weekly E-Mindfulness Service

(Click link again to collapse this text.)

E-Mindfulness is an ongoing, weekly program of 20-minute mindfulness sessions offered via live video.

A typical session includes a short mindfulness lesson, a guided meditation, and Q&A, all tailored for legal professionals. The topic varies week to week, as does the style of meditation we practice. We also provide a video library of prior sessions.

E-Mindfulness works best as a follow-up to either the six-part series or a single-session workshop, to offer your people ongoing support.

+ Defeating Digital Distractions

Modern technology often feels addictive, and this is no accident. These devices were precision-engineered to grab and hold our attention. It’s up to us to learn how to use our devices skillfully so they enhance, rather than erode, our productivity and well-being.

In this workshop, we do just that. Participants learn how to minimize the disruptive impact of their devices so they can enjoy their benefits while avoiding their pitfalls. The workshop draws on mindfulness, cognitive psychology, user experience design, and digital product philosophy.

+ Solving Sleep Problems

(Click link again to collapse this text)

Sleep: we all need it to function, and we all seem to be getting too little of it. Occasional, short-term sleep issues are no cause for concern, but chronic insomnia can harm a person’s health, well-being, and ability to function. Lawyers are especially susceptible due to the stresses and high stakes of our work.

In this workshop, we explore strategies for overcoming insomnia and improving sleep quality. We learn ways to avoid common sleep mistakes, to make our bedrooms and lifestyles more conducive to healthy sleep, and to combat stress and negative thought patterns around sleep. The workshop draws on mindfulness, sleep psychology, and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (“CBTi”).

Nonprofit or government organizations that work with marginalized populations: we'd like to be of service.

THE STRESSES OF LAW PRACTICE

Arguing for a living is not exactly relaxing. Every day, we immerse ourselves in conflict and competition. We work long hours and, thanks to our mobile phones, we're on call 24/7. Our clients expect outstanding results, with almost no margin for error.

These pressures take a serious toll. Lawyers are 3.6 times as likely to suffer from depression as non-lawyers and twice as likely to abuse drugs or alcohol. Stress, anxiety, and burnout are enormous problems in the profession. Many lawyers struggle to stay engaged with their jobs and satisfied with their lives.

HOW MINDFULNESS CAN HELP

Mindfulness offers an alternative to our habits of worry, anxiety, and frustration. Derived from ancient meditation methods and validated by modern science, it is a simple mental practice that introduces a calmer, more satisfying mode of being. Its benefits include:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Improved focus

  • Greater emotional resilience

  • Increased productivity

  • Better decision making

  • Enhanced interpersonal skills

Law firms that offer mindfulness training can expect:

  • Reduced burnout and turnover

  • Greater efficiency and productivity

  • Happier, healthier lawyers

Mindfulness produces remarkable changes in a short time, and the benefits continue to deepen with practice.

Mindfulness for Lawyers helps lawyers reduce stress, boost performance, and improve well-being through mindfulness, a simple mental practice derived from meditation.

Our programs are led by Jon Krop, a Harvard-educated lawyer and mindfulness expert.
